What anchoring does to charity donations

Intervention Description

In pledge drives by public radio stations, individuals who called were randomly assigned to one of two groups. In the treatment group, callers were told that a previous donor made a contribution of $300, despite the average contribution being $75 dollars. In the control group, callers were only informed of the $75 average. The treatment group gave an average of 12% more than the group only told about the average $75.
