Mads Hoefer

Applied Research Fellow

University of Oxford

Mads is a doctoral researcher at Oxford's Institute for New Economic Thinking, where he combines computational economics and behavioural science to study how people form preferences and beliefs, with current work on how fairness, efficiency, and social distance shape generosity. He holds an MSc in Social Data Science from the Oxford Internet Institute and a BSc in PPE from Warwick. His research is grounded in practice: he previously led quantitative user research at Farfetch and currently consults for the World Bank on measuring the welfare impact of extreme weather in developing nations; always with the same aim of understanding what people value and designing for it.

At The Decision Lab, Mads is currently working with a financial regulator on how everyday investors use AI to make decisions, and what that means for the rules around it.

Away from his desk, he's usually outdoors, helping run his college's rowing club, or enjoying music and art.
