Framing effect and vehicle license renewal

Intervention · Public Service

Intervention Description

In Ontario, Canada, a behavioral intervention was used to facilitate vehicle licence sticker renewals, During testing, four groups were each assigned a different treatment. In the first group, the website for licence renewals was made more salient in a mailed letter. In the second group, the website was made more salient and the benefits of renewing online were emphasized. In the third group, the website was made more salient and the consequences/losses of not renewing online were emphasized. The fourth group was a control condition in which a standard notice was mailed. Results showed that the most effective condition was the one in which the website was made more salient and the benefits of renewing online were emphasized, which highlight the importance of framing in facilitating license renewals.
