The challenge

Consumer health features are usually designed on intuition and tested only after launch, when changing course is expensive. Our client, a global consumer electronics company, wanted its digital health team to know a feature would change behavior before development started. They brought us in to build a repeatable behavioral design process and prove it on a live project: a new mindfulness service inside a health app used by 60 million people.

The solution

We built the process and ran it with the client's cross-functional team on the mindfulness service: six self-guided tools designed to integrate with the wider health app and its wearable devices, each grounded in evidence on what drives sustained practice. Rather than hand over a document, we coached the team through the method directly, using dry-run simulations of real design decisions until they could run it without us. Every target behavior was tested through experimentation before a line of production code was written, so design failures surfaced during design, not after launch.

The impact

Design time fell 75%, even though the process added research steps that did not exist before. Team confidence in design decisions doubled over the engagement, measured by pre/post self-report. The mindfulness service moved into the product roadmap for launch alongside the client's next generation of wearables, and the client's team now owns the process, which they can apply to any future feature on the platform.
