Making student loan repayments on time

Intervention Description

The Canada Student Loans Programme (CLSP) and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) sought to increase the number of borrowers who make their first loan repayment on time. Four trials were conducted, providing each group with a different communication. Providing reminders, timely information, and a “call to action” decreased the rates of missed first payments. Having borrowers make a public promise actually led to more missed payments however. Based on their study, CLSP recommends contacting borrowers two weeks before the deadline, contacting low-risk borrowers who would not usually be contacted, and sending out text reminders.
