Increasing diversity of the teacher preparation pipeline through decision mapping & intervention design
In California, 75% of school districts report facing teacher shortages. Even though the student population is composed largely of ethnic and racial minorities, there is a particular dearth of Black and Latinx candidates, creating a disconnect between students and teachers.
One reason for this imbalance is that high-quality teacher preparation materials are not equally available to all candidates. Due to both structural and behavioral factors, diversity decreases at every step along the teacher preparation pipeline, from high school through to hiring.
Very little is known about how stakeholders make decisions about teacher prep materials. The Gates Foundation approached TDL to conduct novel research in this space, to improve the availability and accessibility of high-quality teacher preparation materials.
